Hi. I’m Captain Joe Buettner. Welcome to ENTROPY Sport Fishing LLC.
For years I’ve taken family and friends fishing in the Rocky Mountains, and along both coasts of the US. I’ve always known that this is the job I want when I retire from science. So I decided to start a little early: I incorporated ENTROPY Sport Fishing in 2006 as a family owned and operated Virginia company.
My training with handling boats started in the late 80s with my first boat – a single screw 20 ft cabin cruiser. I took the Power Squadron class and was off learning to read fish finders and Loran C and looking for bird action. A lot has changed with fishing techniques and boat electronics since then: GPS chart plotters, sea surface temperature maps – they all have their importance in finding fish and ensuring we get back to the dock safe and sound. I made it a point to take my son and wife to the USCG Auxiliary boating class before I made my mind up to start our charter company. They both can handle the boat - in good weather and bad - and will act as deckhand when I’m on the bridge. I passed my Captains Exams at the Chesapeake Marine Training Institute just up the road here in Gloucester. My license allows me to take up to 6 people fishing – but I limit that to up to 4; more room and opportunity for more fish-fighting time. Every system on the boat – from the power plant to the navigation electronics – they all help ensure your safety on the water. We have all the USCG required safety equipment including VHF radios to call the Coast Guard, and even our cell phones have reception where we fish; and we have been trained in basic first aid and CPR. If you want to bring someone who’s never fished before – bring ‘em along. If you want to bring your kids, bring ‘em along. We have life preservers for everyone (note that it is a Virginia State Law that ALL kids under 13 years old MUST have a life jacket on when we are underway. NO EXCEPTIONS).
